Bass & Drums
From deep within the archives of bygone hard drives comes...
Bass & Drums
Our story starts in the year 2001 with an Ibanez Soundgear six-string bass guitar. Not the most renowned instrument in the bass guitar family, but one that held a wealth of tone and that I would play in just about every genre of music over the course of a decade. After first hearing about soundfonts and then discovering I could make my own, I sampled the Ibanez and put the sounds together into a soundfont. The results were... less than stellar. So I shelved it and forgot about it for years.
In the meantime... 'round 2005 I played in an indie rock band and did a little touring around the southeast. Initially we were based in St. Petersburg, Florida (later to move to Austin, TX) where the band leader had connections in the community. The band leader told me about this that a drummer friend played that was (in his opinion) one of the best sounding kits ever. A little bit of finagling later we were sampling that drum kit in a huge church sanctuary, but, again, it would soon be forgotten on a hard drive for several years.
Now, more than a decade later, those samples and that soundfont have been revisited and refreshed and are going to see the light of day in a new form. The two bundles feature about 10 variations each of the initial instruments so you can stretch those samples to their breaking point.
